Natural Fly Repellent for Horses

If you’ve ever watched your horse stomp, swish, and shake their way through a fly-heavy afternoon, you know the problem isn’t just inconvenient — it’s stressful. The usual answer? Chemical fly sprays, pesticide-laden fly sheets, and synthetic repellents that you apply by the bucketful and still have to reapply constantly. There has to be a better way.

There is. Meet the BioPower Pet Horse Shield Tag, part of the revolutionary Horse Shield System that uses bioresonance frequency technology to make your horse less attractive to pests.

The Horse Shield Tag clips directly onto your horse’s halter, bridle, or blanket - or even braid it into their mane or tail. It emits energetic frequencies that disrupt the nervous system of flies, ticks, and mosquitos — making your horse a place pests simply don’t want to be. No chemicals. No residue. No constant reapplication. Just clip it on and let it work.

PLEASE NOTE: The Horse Shield Tag is designed to be used in combination with the Horse Shield Pellets for a comprehensive fly and pest repellent system that works from the outside and the inside. We strongly recommend that you use the complete system that includes both, which can be found here at the Horse Shield Starter Kit. This page is primarily for ordering a new tag annually, adding it to the Subscribe & Save auto-ship program, or replacing one if it is lost or damaged.

The tag uses the same bioresonance technology that powers our Pet Shield tag for dogs and cats, with over 1 million sold worldwide, now calibrated and optimized for equine pest prevention. Lightweight, waterproof, and built tough enough for barn life, trail rides, and everything in between. Replace it once a year to maintain full-strength protection through every season.

At BioPower Pet, we believe your horse deserves the same clean, thoughtful care you’d give any family member. The Horse Shield Tag is part of our Shield System™ — 100% chemical-free, safe for daily wear, and kind to the environment. Because a healthy horse is a happy horse, and they shouldn’t need a chemical bath to prove it.

Natural protection, from halter to pasture.

And here’s our promise to you: every BioPower Pet product — including the Horse Shield Tag — is backed by a 60-day money-back guarantee. If you’re not completely satisfied, we’ll make it right — no questions asked. Try it risk-free and see the difference for yourself.

Pro tip: For maximum coverage — especially for horses who spend a significant amount of time indoors — pair the Horse Shield Kit with the Horse Stall Tag. The Horse Shield Kit protects your horse directly; the Stall Tag creates a pest-deterrent field throughout their resting space. Together, they cover your horse on the move and at rest.

FAQ: Can I use the Horse Shield Tag without the Horse Shield Pellets?

Yes, either the tag or the pellets may be used on their own, and for some horses that may be enough. It depends mainly on the conditions in which your horse lives - the climate in your area, the time of year, the cleanliness of the barn, the severity of the season, and even the health of your horse - they all play a role in determining how hard it is to keep pests away. In most situations is it better to be safe and use them both, as that provides maximum protection. In more northern climates when winter comes it is often possible to discontinue feeding the pellets until spring. The complete Horse Shield Starter Kit that includes both can be found here.

Instructions for Use

  • Attach to horse. Clip the Horse Shield Tag directly to your horse’s halter, bridle, or even a fly mask or blanket. If your horse does not wear any gear, then braid it into their mane or tail with a braiding band. No tools, no setup — just clip and go.
  • Give it time. Allow 3–4 weeks for full activation. The bioresonance technology needs consistent, continuous proximity to your horse to establish its complete protective field. No charging, no batteries, no activation steps — just keep it on your horse 24/7. You may start to notice results earlier, but full activation takes 3 to 4 weeks of continuous wear.
  • Consistency is key. Keep it on or near your horse at all times. The tag must remain within a foot or so of your horse around the clock to function properly. If you remove the halter, transfer the tag to a blanket or braid it into their mane or tail. Consistent proximity is essential — if the tag isn’t near your horse all the time, it will not work properly.
  • Replace every 12 months. Replace annually. Each Horse Shield Tag is designed to provide protection for up to 12 months of continuous wear. We recommend swapping in a fresh tag every year to maintain full-strength protection through every season. The easiest way to stay on schedule? Subscribe and save — your new tag will arrive right on time, every year, so your horse’s protection never lapses — and you’ll save 20% off the normal price!
  • Combine with the pellets. We highly recommend using the tag along with the Horse Shield Pellets that make up the complete Horse Shield Kit. The tag can be used on its own, but in most environments the combination will be needed to achieve full protection.

Very happy

I’m really happy with the BioPower Horse Shield Tag. Have helped my horses tremendously with the flys. Haven’t needed to spray them in several days.

These have had a dramatic effect on my mare that would come in the barn with massive hives. We don’t leave halters on 24-7 so we braided in the mane. A few fell out and now we tie a bright pink ribbon to the ring so we can easily locate in the pasture. I use on 7 horses and also have the stall guards. I’ll recommend to our 30 other boarders now that I’ve seen how well the tags work.

Can’t really tell if it’s helping

I’m not sure it has helped the pest problems with my horses. South Georgia is a terrible place to live outside during the summer so I’m not sure anything would help much. Not sure this is worth the money.

It seems to be working

I ordered 4 tags for my four horses. One horse lost the tag within a couple of days (BioPower would it be possible to make the tags a bright color so we could possibly see them in the field, being black, it’s impossible) the other three though seem to have considerably less flies on them.
My only hesitation with reordering for the mare that lost her tag day 3 or 4 is that she rubs her mane and tail, and I know she’ll rub the tag right out. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Love this for my horse

I have a paint horse that is allergic to gnat bites on his belly and after attaching a Biopower Pet tag to his mane he no longer needed any antibug product to his belly anymore. I added a stall tag this year and cant wait to see results.

Seems to work

Tag seems to have helped keep flies off my horses and has stayed braided into mane where i put it (even with 2 horses together). Wish i had put them on earlier in the fly season.

not great

My horse is s dapple gray, which seems to attract more flies than other colors. I've had the shield braided into her mane for weeks now and she still has a large # of flies around eyes, legs and belly. I'd hoped for better, esp. at that price.

Hi Elizabeth! Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. Horses — especially lighter coats like dapples and grays — do tend to attract more flies, so we understand how frustrating that can be. The Pet Shield is designed to help reduce fly issues, but depending on your horse’s environment, additional support may sometimes be needed for flies around the face and legs. Many of our horse customers find success by pairing the Shield with our natural Spray or adding the Horse Stall tag. Please reach out if there is anything else we can do to help.

Sometimes it seems to be working…?

The heat and humidity are horrible right now and the flies are relentless so I still see the horses wearing the shield tag upset over flies when it’s nasty out but when it’s just normal hot I have noticed they are swishing their tails way less than the horses without the tags. I’m not sure why that’s the case since it’s supposed to be a whole body frequency thing but that’s what I’ve noticed so far.

I braided it in my horses mane 2 weeks ago. The flies are still coming after him!

Was hoping allergy prone horse would benefit from having less flies, mosquitoes, but allergies and bugs seem about the same.

Horse protection

I have 5 horses and have bought bio power for all 5
They are out in a pasture all day. In at night in their stalls.
I do not put halters on them unless leading them
I appreciate your policy for replacement at 1/2 off price
I braid the tag into their mane with rubber bands and then tape with red electrical tape
I have lost one in the pasture and was wondering why you don’t have some sort of way to highlight the tag when lost
It’s impossible to see the tag on the ground as it’s so dark and blends in with the soil
I have experimented with my horses how to keep them on
But due to their grooming each other and rubbing against things they can fall off.
I have confidence they work but this part of finding the tags when lost is frustrating!!!
Wish you had some way to improve this.
Thank you
