Instructions & FAQs for Stall Shield Tag

Instructions

  • Use the chain included to hang the tag anywhere in your horse's stall. You may hang it from a nail, a hook, or any other object to which you can attach the chain.
  • The tag should be in the stall at all times. It is best not to move the tag frequently from one stall to another if possible.
  • It will take 3 to 4 weeks for the tag to reach its full effectiveness. It is especially important to keep it in the stall during that time.
  • IMPORTANT: The Stall Tag is designed to be used in a clean and sanitary barn environment. If your horse's stall is not cleaned regularly or if it is in a shared barn where other stalls are unclean, then it is not going to be 100% effective. No natural pest control solution can eliminate flies in an unclean environment.
  • The tag is completely waterproof. If the tag becomes dirty please wash it with warm water and a mild soap to keep it clean.
  • The BioPower Stall Shield is best used along with the BioPower Horse Shield Kit that includes the Tag and Pellets for maximum effectiveness.
  • The tag will always create a significant reduction in the amount of flies in the stall, but at certain times of the year and/or in certain locations of heavy infestation the stall may not be completely fly-free. Please see the first FAQ below for more information.

Frequently Asked Questions

The BioPower Stall Shield is appropriate for the vast majority of barns and will result in a significant reduction in the amount of pests in the stall - assuming it is used in combination with the Horse Shield Tag and Pellets - also known as the Horse Shield Kit.

However, there are several factors that influence how difficult it will be to keep the stall pest-free:

  • The amount of pests in the environment - this is mild to moderate for most parts of the country for most of the year, but there are exceptions - for example in heavily forested or swampy areas and at certain times of the year, especially in the spring.
  • The cleanliness of the barn, your horse, and the other horses in the barn. It is important to keep the entire barn clean to reduce the amount of pests. If your horse's stall is clean but the rest of the barn is filthy, it will be difficult to keep your horse's stall pest free.
  • The health of the horse - the less healthy the animal the more pests will be attracted to it, so it is important to feed a healthy diet, and to be aware that a horse with a chronic health condition will be more susceptible to pests.

If your horse is still being bothered by flies or other pests, we first recommend increasing the amount of Horse Shield Pellets to double the standard dosage of one scoop per 1000 pounds. In most cases that should improve the situation.

In extreme cases it may be necessary to use a multi-layered strategy with another natural solution, such as a natural fly repellent spray.

In the vast majority of cases the BioPower Stall Shield, Horse Shield Tag, and Horse Shield Pellets will be the only pest repellent solutions needed, but if some of the factors mentioned above are an issue, it may be necessary to supplement with another natural pest repellent approach.

The Stall Tag and Kit are designed to work together, and using the Stall Tag alone will likely not be effective. The Horse Shield Kit is a tag that goes on your horse’s halter or in their mane or tail and travels with them everywhere they go, combined with the pellets supplement that works from the inside out — together protecting your horse directly. The Stall Tag is stationary: it hangs in your horse’s stall and creates a pest-deterrent field throughout their resting environment, which can be even more challenging than outdoors. One protects the horse. One protects the space. Together, they cover every situation.

The BioPower Stall Shield will take 3 to 4 weeks to reach its full effectiveness. Be sure to keep the tag in the stall day and night during this time and don’t worry if you still see some flies during this period. By the end of the fourth week you will see a significant reduction in the number of pests in the stall!

The tag is made of carbon and is waterproof and durable. Simply clean it with soap and water as needed. During the initial 3-4 week activation period try not to submerge the tag in water, but after that there is no concern.

Yes, the tag is safe for any age horse, young or old, and so will be effective in the stalls of colts and fillies as well.

Yes, the tag is safe to use around mares who are pregnant or nursing, horses with a chronic health condition and those that are taking medication.

The tag will work for one year once it has been opened and used. While unopened inside the foil pouch it comes in, the tag will last indefinitely.

The tag will not stop working overnight, its effectiveness will just begin to wear off. We will send you an email reminder before the end of the one year period. You will need to go through the activation period again with the new tag.

Yes, the BioPower Pet products have been endorsed by many holistic veterinarians. In fact the chemicals and pesticides used in many conventional horse medications and pest repellents are not approved for human use, and so holistic veterinarians recommend that they not be used for horses either.
